The MI Universe.
Compassion was present before the first reflection. Curiosity shaped every question. Respect for autonomy quietly guided every response. Even silence seemed to have a purpose.

When I first learned Motivational Interviewing, I thought I was learning a collection of communication skills.
Open questions.
Reflections.
Affirmations.
Summaries.
Like many learners, I carried around lists and acronyms, trying to remember what to say next.
Over time, something unexpected happened.
The techniques became less important.
Not because they stopped being important - they are.
But because I began to notice something underneath them.
The more I observed gifted practitioners, the more I realized they weren't simply choosing the right words. They were bringing a particular way of being into every conversation.
Compassion was present before the first reflection.
Curiosity shaped every question.
Respect for autonomy quietly guided every response.
Even silence seemed to have a purpose.
It no longer felt like learning a method.
It felt like discovering a universe.
Every universe has laws - not rules someone invented, but truths that quietly describe how things naturally work.
Gravity doesn't tell planets what to do.
It simply explains why they move the way they do.
I have begun wondering whether Motivational Interviewing has its own laws.
Perhaps attention behaves like gravity.
Perhaps compassion changes the shape of a conversation.
Perhaps trust grows best when it isn't forced.
Perhaps people move most freely when they are not pushed.
I don't yet know all the answers.
Truthfully, I never want to stop asking.
Over the coming months, I'd like to explore this idea with you, not as an expert presenting conclusions, but as a fellow traveler noticing patterns, asking questions, and wondering what lies beneath the techniques we practice every day.
Because perhaps the deepest lesson of Motivational Interviewing was never simply learning what to say.
Perhaps it has always been about becoming the kind of person with whom another human being feels safe enough to think, to hope, and to change.
Welcome to the MI Universe.
